The state of Maryland has been pouring millions of public dollars into private efforts to transform one of the Chesapeake Bay’s biggest scourges — excess chicken waste — into something marketable.

So far, with not much luck.

But a new project in Somerset County is bringing fresh hope to the program, state agricultural officials say. CleanBay Renewables is going big, becoming the first of its kind to extend its reach beyond a single farm.
